Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society Sloop News

May 2006

The month of May brought the building of the last major component to be set into the Jig. Students milled and laminated up the Sheer Clamp, which is the beam just below the deck line that all the frames bolt to along the inside of the hull to deck  joint. This was followed by the final gluing and bolting of frames into the Jig.

As of the first week in June the forward frames were in and the fitting of the mid ship and aft ones is on going. By months end the shaping process should be well underway. Each frame must be hand shaped to the correct angle at the edges so as to fit the planks.

Timber for the mast and boom is inbound from up-state New York and should arrive in June.

With summer coming, the original ‘A’ Team will return to work. They started the project over Easter Break 2005 and are still hard at it every chance they get. They are looking forward to getting out of school and having some fun back at the Sloop.

All the best to you out there in cyber space, from all of us here at the JVDPS.
