Naval Architect

Dr. Mark A. Gammon is an Operational Research analyst working for DRDC Atlantic, in Halifax, Nova Scotia where his wife Ayse and he sail a Contessa 26 out of Armdale Yacht Club, in the North West Arm.

Dr. Gammon graduated with a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s in Applied Science specializing in hydrodynamics.  After working for the Canadian Navy for 9 years he moved with his wife to Istanbul, Turkey where he worked for the RMK Shipyard as a planner.

His project on a classic sailing Aegean “Tirandil” can be viewed at the Rahmi Koc Industrial Museum in Istanbul.  Mark learned Turkish and completed his Doctorate in Engineering at the Department of Naval Architecture at Yildiz Technical University.

He has presented papers on hull form optimization, most recently at the Chesapeake Sailing Yacht Symposium in Annapolis. He teaches naval architecture at Dalhousie University in Halifax.  In his spare time Mark enjoys designing boats.

"The Jost Van Dyke 32 is reminiscent of the Island work boats and their Falmouth Quay punt heritage, with a high bow and a long sweeping sheer.  The deep draft and full keel ensure stability while long buttock provide a swifter run.  Modern construction is in keeping with traditional heavier scantlings."
